Weight of a DS?

Postby boone » Tue Mar 23, 1999 1:00 am

I recently moved to South Carolina. Here, you supposedly aren't required to have a license plate on your trailer unless the trailer and cargo weigh more than 2500 pounds.

While I'm fairly certain I meet that requirement, I am curious to find out how much my DS2, mast, boom, rigging, and trailer might actually weigh. Any estimates?

Your are WELL under the 2500 lb limit.

The boat has a minimum weight for racing which is 575 lbs. I copied the following from the DS handbook which is available on this site:

5.15 The hull and centerboard complete with all permanent fittings, fixed ballast, mast, boom, spinnaker pole, all standing and running rigging, rudder and tiller assembly: but less sails and all loose gear, such as but not limited to anchor, paddle, and all lines that are not running rigging, shall weigh a mininmum of 575 pounds.

Most recreational boats weigh closer to 600 pounds, and a good sturdy trailer is probably around 300 lbs. max, so w/ sails and misc gear, I'd figure 925-1000 lbs...
