Cape Dory vs. Cat Boat....

Postby Pam » Sat Sep 10, 2005 10:01 am

What sailboats offer a trailor, comfort for a family of five, and two sails?

I have a 14' daysailer now. My poor husband can't get comfortable - not enough room!

Cat boats are tremendous for their length, but slow (?) and I really want two sails.

Cape Dory's (and Ensigns) are lovely, but have small cockpits. Hauling and yard storage (fixed keel) is pricey where I am located.

Catalina 25's have a decent space - do they have a fixed keel?

I grew up on the water, and have instincts for sailing and boat handling. I'm returning to the sport after 20 years of being otherwise occupied ;-)

check out both the Macgregor and Oday 25. Both I believe have centerboards and are 'trailerable', albeit at the upper end of comfortable trailerability. Do a search on their respective sites. I think you will find that they meet your specs although, I would suggest no boat smaller than the QEII would be comfortable for a family of 5. It would however be tolerable for short periods, each have at least two sails, and can be stored in your driveway on the trailer.
