Hull Number Index and Builder Chart

In looking at the Hull Number Index and Builder Chart, there are some big gaps, especially within the DS 1. According to the chart, O'Day did not manufacture a DS1 in 1973...yet I just bought a 1973 O'Day Daysailer1, sail number 6872.

I would like to take on the task of updating the chart with your help. Send me your hull number (if known), sail number and manufacturer. Over the winter, I will compile a list and update the chart.

Thanks...I found your document and harvested the information I needed. There are lot of Daysailers out there with more than a few different layouts. I hope between the two of us, we can put together more information about what is out there.

Letters in the hull number?

So I've found the key for decoding the hull number, ie. XDYD for O'Day Daysailer, then 8366 for Sail number, but then where it's supposed to list the manufacture date, mine says M77D. So, I'm assuming it's a 1977, which I already knew about the boat - but what does the M and D mean? March, May? December?

The D means "November" and M77 means the 1977 "model year," presumably the real date therefore is Nov 76.

The ID on my transom (well, my BOAT'S transom - my wife has a serious disdain for "tramp stamps"! ;-P) is XDY10099M79LD, whereas on the FL state documentation it's XDYD10099M79LD. So, I've run into registration problems before. Obviously, there have been many different markings used over the years ...

You'd think they would agree on a common length...

Tim,

All the information I can find says that the HIN should have 12 digits.

One of yours is 13, the other 14...

That means they should both be wrong, or that they contain data beyond the actual HIN.

The problem with the hull numbereing schemes is that the "modern" form of HIN itself went through a number of versions. This is also documented here.

The current scheme is valid for boats built after 1984.

greenlake - thanks for clarifying the hull number and date for me. good to know that she was born in november of 76 - i'll have to celebrate this fall....

Mine will have a really big anniversary in two. Unfortunately, I can't narrow it down to a month - I don't have a modern HIN for it (in fact, not even any hull plate of any kind - in those days, they hadn't started with the non-removable ones yet).

To obfuscate a little further, I looked again, and what's stamped on the transom is actually:

XDY10099M79L-D

with the "-D" at the end. So the hull ID is actually 14 characters ...

Tim,

no the HIN is the 12 character part and the -D is something in addition. I've found mention of other types of additions, like country codes, but in front of, not behind, IIRC.

In that case, it seems you have a good case to tell your state, that their version of the HIN is incorrect, not only because it doesn't match what's on your boat, but that extra D following the three letter MIC in front doesn't fit the pattern for a HIN per federal regulation. Just in case you need some ammunition :)

So far, with the exception of the first time, I've been able to renew the registration no prob just going by what they have on record. Seems they don't care whether the extra D is after the "XDY" or the end of the ID. So, I'm a bit concerned about "rocking the boat" so to speak and debating the issue with them ...

All I know is that XDY10099M79L-D is what's stamped on the transom, and that is what The Red Witch will be known by for now and forever more! 8)
