Years ago back on one of the Great Lakes I saw a large 70'+/- Motor Yacht named "Jobsite" and figured the owner had to be in a very successful construction related business to afford an impressive boat that size.
Also figured what a great way to get away from the office or home by simply calling in and saying "I'll be late as I'm still at the Jobsite!"

Best boat name I've seen recently in Colorado, especially in these economic times, was a yacht (anything over 30' on any CO lake qualifies IMO to be called a yacht), was the name, "Chapter 11."

Great name. I love the graphic!

PS: Gave me a great idea, got quite a gouge last year on my c-20 when a hoist stuck me during a beaching and was trying to come up w/ a font type for the name that would hide it... voila!!.... a silhouette graphic. Thx

In that vein, just spotted a small runabout with the name "Business Trip" the other day.

Transom width?

My mom wants to give me vinyl lettering (boatletteringtoyou.com) to adhere the name of my new-to-me DSI (1983) and my sister is going to order, but none of us has easy access to actually measure the transom, the location we think is best. I've looked in my manual and searched the forum but find no transom-width measurement. Could someone please share....

Name lettering tips also welcome. The name, Elihu Islander II, is pretty long and we are also trying to decide whether to split it across the stern or stack it on the starboard side.

We considered the sides as an alternative, but as my mom says, the stripes make it kinda busy already.

I opted for a very prominent name that's 13 letters long. I was able to fit it into a 48" x 5" area (actually a bit less) and that includes the "gap" I left for the rudder (that gap is more than the minimal width so that the name can be read from an angle).

The break isn't even, I have more letters on the right, so I added some decoration to the first letter to help balance things visually. I think that makes the first letter plus decoations closer to 6" tall.

At the size I have my letters, I could fit the word "Islander" on the right, but the II would be cramped. One solution for this is to make the II sit "behind" the word Islander (using a different color and making the II a bit larger and possibly slanted: II). Or you could use a type style that uses slightly narrower letters than what I used - I think the one for my boat name was a pretty broad design. Or you could break the second word as in "Is || lander" where the || shows the rudder location.

Many options.

The full area is 64"x16", but the transom curves, so usable width is less (and you do want to leave some space around the name).

Thank you very much GL. Just the sort of advice (and measurements) I was needing. : )
Interesting thought about putting the II behind ...
Will share with my sister.

Just went through the photo gallery and clipped a bunch of transom shots to send to my sister along with your note. Helpful to see how other people do the names.

Good info in the post. We are having a renaming ceremony in a couple of weeks.

Thanks!

Thanks for the link, Rob. Fortunately, no previous owner seems to have put a name on the transom or anywhere else, so I will consider holding a christening ceremony per John Vigor once we get the letters on the transom. Sounds fun. : )
