Flotation in a Mariner 19

Postby jazzmanrandy » Thu Jan 08, 2015 11:49 am

Hello,

I'm considering purchasing either a DS or a Mariner and wondered where the flotation is located.

Thanks,

On the Day Sailer the flotation for the DS1s are in the seats and forward flotation tank, on the DS2s (and DS3s) the flotation is in the bilge area since the bilge is closed. The Mariner's flotation is in the seats and forward flotation tank for the pre 2+2 models (1963 to late 1968) and for the 2+2 models the flotation is in the quarter berths and the V-berth area, with some additional under the seats near the stern.

I cannot speak for the Mariner, but the foam flotation blocks on the DS become waterlogged and must be replaced.
You will find loads of thread on this topic here.
THe DS used blocks of beaded polystyrene - like on cheap coolers. In time these become waterlogged.
The fix is to cut inspection ports into the flotation tanks and yank out all the old blocks. Mine were saturated and probably weighed >200 lbs. They no longer contributed to the safety of the boat, and became a hazard.
Most opt to replace the blocks with swim noodles, as they are a cheap source of closed cell foam and will not get waterlogged. A few folks collected liter soda bottles to pack into the flotation tanks.
You will need about 17 cubic feet of positive flotation.

I have about 60 pool noodles cramed into various places in the bilge of my DS2.
