You don't like Houston traffic, imagine that. Austin can be a little bad as well during peak times, but once through it's not bad. Dripping Springs (where I am) is west of Austin on Hwy 290 west. If you come through, I want to buy you dinner at the Salt Lick BBQ, it is where I take my crews to before the Tx200 and has really good BBQ. We'll go sailing if you need a break from driving, especially after dealing with Houston.

When you head west again, you can take Hwy 290 through Johnson City and Fredricksburg. It connects to IH-10 which is the road to take west. If interested, just before you get to IH-10 is the town of Harper where Duckworks is located.

Nice talking to you today John. Wish I could have stopped, but I really needed to make some time and miles today. Had I been able to leave Monday like I wanted to instead of Wednesday, and been able to get further the first two days, it would have been a different story. Would have definitely stopped by DWBBS had I gone that route! But I logged over 500 miles today, and am currently in Fort Stockton.

After talking to you today, I figured you would probably be around Ft. Stockton by days end. Enjoyed the talk on the phone. Have a safe drive. You should be able to make it out of Texas tomorrow, then the states get smaller again.

Am just west of Phoenix tonight. More nasty storms just west of Ft. S. this AM, but actually an enjoyable drive after that. The Edge is handling the mountains and altitude well, and Rum Line is trailering well as well (well, that's a lotta wells!). Prolly 1-1/2 more days of driving, give or take. I'm trying to work it so I get to SC early in the day so I have time to deal with where to put the boat. Navigation will get tricky once I get to San Fernando. Need to take a route with minimal crossing of mountains, but I think I've found one, so we'll see ...

Sounds like your making good time. A little rain is better than dealing with blowing sand. I hauled horses across that way in the late 80's and we had to cover the sides of the trailer to protect the horses during a sand storm. Your getting closer.

Arrived SC around noon yesterday, and hit the ground runnin'. Lots to take care of in a very short amount of time. Yeah, I kept seeing signs warning of dust storms, but didn't go through any. Did see one dust devil in the distance in AZ. With those, it's the ones you can't see that'll get ya ... <8~O

Oh, and the rain I went through? NONE of it was "a little", especially around Baton Rouge (got through there in the nick of time!), and between Ft Stockton and El Paso - that was worse than BR ...

I think you will enjoy the sailing scene in Santa Cruz. Ocean sailing is quite different and you might be surprised how protected Santa Cruz and Monterey Bay is. You can sail about one mine out and then there is like a line where you hit the big nasty stuff. But if you choose to sail close in, it is really quite warm and gentle. Oh did I mention that the water is cold? The campus has a sailing station in the harbor so you might want to get involved and get a feel for the sailing opportunities. Heck, you aren't that far from SF Bay and then you are in one of the best places to sail in the world in my opinion.

Thanks Rich, I'll check that out. Right now the boat is in the storage lot at Moss Landing, since I couldn't seem to get anyone at SC Harbor to return my calls ... grrrrr
