Anyone ever heard of a American 16?
I wondered why I couldn't find a picture that looked just like mine. Sorry guys I was told it was a 68 Oday. I now believe it is not. Its very similar, I'm not to disappointed just feel mislead. :?

so you got one of the DS clones. While we can't help you with things that are specific to that design, you still might find a lot of what we are discussing (and have discussed) here quite relevant and perhaps interesting. Make sure you look around (outside the "Day Sailer I Only" part of the site as well). We don't mind friendly lurkers.

Thanks again. Got around to checking the swing keel today. Good news it's there, bad news needs pivot repair. :(

I think even on your boat it would be called a "centerboard" not a swing keel - that is, unless it is seriously weighted.

My last boat a potter, was a chunk of steel, I stand corrected. I can learn much from you and this group of sailors.

Cool. Glad.

As this thread isn't about a DS1, I'll move it to the "Miscellanous" section in the forum.

I used to have an American 16, but never sailed it due to needing some repairs. They were made by American Fiberglass Corporation (AFC). There used to be (maybe still there) an AFC site on Yahoo. The American 16 is 15'-10" LOA and they are one of the short lived Day Sailer clones, although they are a 11" shorter than the Day Sailer. They carry a 125 sq. ft. of sail (same as Day Sailer), I've read reports that they are a little overpowered. The centerboard is 1/4" (or 3/8") aluminum plate as is the 1/4" rudder blade, no foil shape. Attached is a picture of the boat I had.

Chocolatehauler,

Here are A16 data from an AFC brochure, if it helps.

At 15'10" it's about a foot shorter than a DS, but with almost the same beam, and the sail area may be slightly smaller as well, but probably not significantly. Weight is comparable, so generally it should have similar sailing characteristics, if you are in the mood to compare. (Mast is about the same height,to within 6" or so).

That's why it's sometimes referred to as a DS clone on this forum.

After more research found a boat and pics showing the boat and manufactures plate. Clearly same boat as mine. Schwill Yachts DS-16 Made in Canada. dropped the centerboard today.
(Greenlake) I found the centerboard heavier then I expected. Seems to be fiberglass but weighs 45 lbs. Seems like there is steel or lead in there.

This is what a manufacturer's plate looks like for an AFC A-16.

I now see why there is a lot of discussion over when and where these boats are made. When the tags are missing it becomes a challenge. I went from Oday to American to Schwill. With a sail number of 96 I'm guessing 70's .
