Sail Numbers

Postby Guest » Wed May 06, 1998 12:00 am

I have recently purchased a 1979 Day Sailer II. The sails that came with the boat ( I believe they are original ) do not have the numbers on the sails. The Hull number is XDY10264M79H-D. Am I right to think that the sail numbers should be 10264 ? If someone can answer this please let me know.

That number sounds about right for an O'Day DS II from 1979. I am not sure if O'Day had started to use the class number as part of the hull number by that time. Rebel/Spindrift had and they were in the range of 11000 - 11199 I think.

I also recently purchased a Daysailer I, 1980 Spindrift. The hull number is RRR11062MB80G. Does this mean my sail number should be 11062? The sails that came with the boat #18! Can this be right? How?

Thanks go to Mike Boone, this site is a great resource. BTW, I live in Westerville, OH. Any chance I'll see you on Hoover?

Your Class/Sail Number is 11062. Rebel/Spindrift used the class number to make up the hull number etched/molded into the transom.

FYI: The last three characters in the hull number tell you the model year and month your boat's hull was molded in. The model year in your case is 19(80), which began in September(A) of 1979. So the month it was molded in was March(G). The months are denoted by the letters of the alphabet, starting with a For Sep., B for October, ...

HIN Format, XDYDxxxxMyym or XDYDxxxxmmyy or XDYxxxxxMyym-D
XDY = O'Day D = Day Sailer (no distinction between DS I, DS II, DS III) xxxx or xxxxx = class# M = model year format m = letter code for month (A = August, B = Sept., C = Oct.......L = July) yy = model year. mm = month if "M" model year was not used, O'Day as well as other builders used both numbering systems, but not at same time.
Using my boat's HIN, XDY10201M79E-D, XDY=O'Day, 10201=class#, M79=1979 model year, E=December 1978, D=Day Sailer. The modle year under this format ran from August to July, so 1979 model year was August 1978 to July 1979.
On boats built before the HIN requirement went into effect on 01 Nov. 1972, O'Day gave every boat 2 numbers, a Hull # and a Class#. Hull # was based on O'Day's total number of boats built, Class # was based on how many of that class had been built. My old (1969 or 68) Widgeon was Hull# 22698 Class#1791. This means that she was the 22,698th boat built by O'Day and the 1791st Widgeon.
