Cleaning Used Sails

Postby psness » Tue Apr 13, 2004 7:57 am

I am buying a 1979 DS II and just got the sails, which are not in bad shape structurally other than two small holes in the jib. They are dirty, have some rust? spots and mildew stains and the seams are very dirty. Before I ship them off for restoration I thought I'd try to clean them first. Does anyone know if the new "oxy" cleaners would cause damage? They have no bleach, but they do wonders in the house. We use them to clean stains off the carpet. I was going to soak them in a tub with some this type of cleaner, then hoist them up in the back yard and rinse them with a hose. Any thoughts?

I used oxyclean last year on both the main and jib, and it did a great job on both mildew and rust stains without any evident damage to the dacron.
