El-Nino winds at Morro Bay

Found this image on another forum with a statement that an El-Nino induced water spout had caused some issues. When looking closer at the picture, I thought I could recognize the type of boat involved. Anyone here?

[Baysailer]

Read the attached article and it looked like a number of the Morro Bay Daysailer fleet boats were affected. Hopefully no major damage and they can get the boats back on the trailers and repaired soon. Never sailed in Morro Bay but have been there and it's a great seaside community.

The above is what it looked like, a few days before the big excitement. My crew and I stayed there between Christmas and New Year's. There was a prediction of gale-force winds, so we brought a kayak but didn't expect to use it. The wind was moderate, cool and refreshing when we showed up, but then it calmed way down. We were able to kayak, and we saw three Daysailers go out at different times, moving surprisingly fast in wind that seemed really mild, judging by the flag at the yacht club. I was impressed by two of them that returned from up the bay and zipped across the channel between moored boats, with a strong tide moving broadside (outgoing) as they crossed, without bumping anything.

We've met some of the Otters, and they're really nice people and helpful to newbies. I hope they can get their boats back on the water without too much of a problem.

Fleet 128 did take a hit this past week in Morro Bay. According to witnesses DS were tossed about 10 feet into the air. Serveral boats were blown off their trailer including mine - 4091 - Amorcita (orange chainplate covers). Student Driver - Dawn Huntsinger and Brett Cross's boat ended up almost inverted and with a broken mast (pink stripe). My mast was bent but I was able to bend it back. There is a long gash in my hull. Unbelievably my centerboard was undamaged. I'm thinking the boat was held on its side by the rig and the board just hung down and rested on the concrete. The green boat in the previous picture is Kevin Williams' Protest (white hull in the picture here). We are still discovering damage we did not notice at first but I think they will all sail again.

Sorry to see that. Would tie down straps have helped keep the boats on their trailers and have reduced damage?

Todd, is that black trailer in the foreground from your boat the trailer it blew off of?

I guess this is a pretty good testament to how good a Daysailer he really is. It's light enough to fly but strong enough to land on the hard without being destroyed!
