This may have no bearing on the subject, but I once followed a freighter through a channel to lake Michigan and got a big surprise. My sailboat was driven from side to side by the turbulence in his wake. I had the motor running to get through the channel and was just barley able to keep the boat off the channel walls. Turbulence on rudder and keel was amazing.
