DSIII Rigging Question

Postby DS1976 » Mon Apr 23, 2018 1:56 pm

Hello,
I've just purchased a DSIII -- does anyone know what the hardware behind the shroud in this photo is for? It's not clear from the photo, but there's a small hole going through it.

Doesn't look familiar (to me, anyway). Is there a matching one on the other side?

Can't tell from the photo. Is it just a post, or does it have a hole?

Does it look original (may be able to tell from the way it's fastened underneath)?

Any spare bits that are part of the running rigging that came with the boat?

my guess is that its a cigarette holder. When winds are very, very light, you light a cigarette and place it in the post to see which way the wind is drifting.

To answer some questions, yes there’s one on each side. And there’s a small hole going through it - smaller diameter than the pin for the shrouds. The only extra hardware the boat came with was something to hang boat from garage ceiling but it doesn’t have any connectors that would fit. (And yes, might also be for a very slim cigarette)

If these are for rigging (and not, for example, for attaching some cover or other non-sailing item), the only thing that I would place in that location (close to, but aft of the shrouds) would be something to bring the foreguy in when running a spinnaker. But that would require some kind of block, snatch or otherwise to connect to these. You didn't say you had any additional hardware in the running rigging, nor do we know whether you even have a spinnaker.

Sorry, best I can come up with.

Place to hang a small fender maybe? Or how about a boom tent? Just thinkin' ! I know I'm going to have to start using a fender on my DSII because the pier I use most is really beginning to destroy my rub rail, and that looks like the exact place I need to hang one!

@hsubman: correct - best place for a single fender, and a big one. You can then "balance" the boat around that with a line from the bow (or foredeck cleat) and stern cleat. While we are speaking of fenders, for any fenders along the cockpit I like the ones that look like and "r", that is, have the top bent at 90 degrees.

A tent hoop could be placed over and anchored with both these pins, but wouldn't we expect a second hoop near the end of the boat?

It was thinking of such "aftermarket" modifications that I was asking whether there's any indication that these are not original, e.g. different style nut used to bolt them from the bottom?
