DS I Sail Dimensions

Postby Mike M. » Fri Dec 02, 2005 11:04 am

Somewhere in all my searching, I've run across the dimensions for DS I Mainsails along with the measurements for reefing points. Can anyone redirect me? I've misplaced the info and want to check some things.

When looking at the pics you all have posted, it seems my boom is always much lower then yours appear to be. (We are always having to duck under it) My mast was cut by a PO and the tabernacle installed. I'm wondering if A: he changed the mast length above the cuddy roof or B: the sails are oversized for some reason. Would a boomkicker or topping lift help solve this problem. I'm only 5' 11" and figure I shouldn't have to duck every time I jibe, even when sitting on the seat.

I figure this is a good time of the year to rig it out in the yard, make the measurements and see if all things check out.

I'm also sending my main to a loft for some repairs and want to add a set of reefing points.

While I'm on the subject of sails, mine doesn't have the number on it, just the DS. The hull is #3780. Is there any reason I should add the numbers? And if so, is it the 3780? I've always assumed the hull and sail numbers matched but you know what happens when you assume. I haven't seen aything on it unless I intend to race, which I don't.

sail demensions

Postby gary l. britton » Fri Dec 02, 2005 3:41 pm

Hi Mike:

Curious to know which sailmaker you are sending your sails to. Is it one in the OKC area? Or are you sending the sail somewhere else? I have been thinking about putting reefing points in my sail also.

Sorry I cannot help with the length of the mast above the cuddy, but I do know there is some thread on this site that deals with that matter. I'll do some searching also and see if I can help.

Take care and fair winds,

Gary

mast length

Postby gary l. britton » Fri Dec 02, 2005 5:48 pm

Hi again Mike:

On "Odayowners.com", they show the mast as 24' 11", but do ot mention if that is the total length of the mast, or the height of the mast above the cuddy. I assume that is the total lenght of mast. Later this weekend I will be in OKC, not sure when, and I will stop by Lake Hefner and measure the total length of my mast and try to guestimate the lenght that would be above the cuddy.

Take care and fair winds,

Gary~

I have a lead on a sail loft in Tulsa that was recommended by West Marine. Kerr Sailmakers, 916-437-0544. I'll let you know what I find out when I call them. Depending on the timing, if you like, I could carry yours over there with mine and pick them up when done.

Sails

Thanks Mike:

I'll probably wait a while before or if I do get reefing points placed on the sail. We will be going out of town for a couple of weeks to see our eldest daughter and grandsons and husband. Unfortunately we have to meet them in Honolulu, so I will have to miss this next cold blast from the north.

I will be anxious to hear what you think of the sailmakers in Tulsa.

Take care and fair winds.

reef points

Postby Roger » Sat Dec 03, 2005 1:47 am

FWIW, I installed a single set of reef points as high as possible under the first batten. I think it was around 42 inches up the leech. The matching point along the luff was 39 inches up or thereabouts. You can roll out your sail and mark the spot yourself. Your sailmaker will do the rest. You will also want 3 reef patches put in along the reef line to lightly tie your sail to the boom.

As for mast height the measurements document (sections 7.5 to 7.7)indicate that the mast is 22 feet 6 inches from the cuddy top to the black band at the mast top. The distance between the bottom band (where the boom attaches) and the cuddy top is 2 feet even.

You are also correct about your hull number and sail number being the same. Section 8 of the measurement document speaks to the sail numbers. They imply that the specs must comply while racing only. If you do add them, they need to be on both sides of the sail, 12 x 8 inches in dimension and 2 inches thick. (Sect 8.11)

Mast

Postby gary l. britton » Sat Dec 03, 2005 1:51 pm

Mike:

Just came back from the lake. Been a couple of weeks since I checked up on the boat. Boy, the winds were really picking up from the north and cold. Lake was white capping. Appears the strong winds of a couple of weeks ago moved the boat and trailer about a foot. Glad I have it tied onto the trailer and anchored to the ground. If not, the winds may have taken the boat off the trailer or turned over boat and trailer.

Measured my mast. I am sure that the measurements are pretty close to accurate.

Total mast length: 24' 7 1/2 "
Total mast above cuddy: 22' 2" (+/- 1 ")

Hope that this helps.

Fair winds,

Gary

Thanks for braving the cold winds, Gary. Have a good trip, enjoy the kids and grandkids. Pity you have to go to Hawaii to do it but I guess somebody's got to do it.
