Sail number question

Postby Kevin F » Wed Jul 26, 2006 9:07 pm

I just purchased a DS 1 class/sail number 3451 but the title says it is a 1973, which I know can not be correct. I verified the 3451 number on the manufacturers ID plate on the forward bulk head. Anybody out there with a sail number close with an accurate date of manufacture? I am thinking it might be accually a 1969.

sail number

Postby gary l. britton » Wed Jul 26, 2006 9:41 pm

Hi:

Mine is #3235 and it is a 1966 DS I. Somewhere on this site is a table of years and boat numbers. Hope this helps.

Sail Nbr.

Postby KaiB » Thu Jul 27, 2006 9:20 am

This is interesting.

"Sadie B." is hull nbr 17510 (a 1968) and sail nbr 3162. Original boat; the transom plate numbers agree with the sail numbers.

I just responded to Mike's post regarding the DS-1 he picked up (the for sale thread)...his has hull nbr 15617 and sail nbr 2772.

Sumptin ain't registering...did O'Day just shotgun the numbers as they built boats. I wonder if hull numbers were properly sequenced, but sail numbers were assigned as the builder pulled mainsails randomly from the stack.

Hmmm...must have more coffee.

Sail Nbr

Mike;

I'll betchya "Patty K" wears Sail Nbr 3789 and that her Hull nbr is in the 18 thousand range.

We have a nice breeze up here-shure would be fun to be out right now...105 degrees this weekend, huh? Perhaps we could all get together in mid Sept.

Sail number

Hi:

Go to the "technical index" on the home page, then click "Hull number" on the drop down menu. This may give you at least a range of dates on when your boat was built. My title claims I have a 1966, DS I, #3235. The "State of Oklahoma" cannot be wrong !!!!!!!!!!! They never make mistakes !! (HA !) (if you believe that last statement, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I'll sell you)

I do believe that Roger, in Canada, has a fairly extensive list of hull numbers and dates of production. Roger, if you read this, correct me if I am wrong on this, but I seem to remember a thread asking for hull numbers and dates of production, either from this forum or another forum. That was several months ago, hell, maybe even a year or so ago. You know how it is as we get on with age.

Anyway, good luck on your quest.

roger that in Canada

The early hull numbers are not easily indicative of the year of build because Oday started in 1957 with the DS I and hull number 1 ending the DS I series in 1972 (fifteen years later) with an unknown hull number.

As such the best way to date the early DS I's is to find someone who has a close hull number and knows the year of their built.

Boatworks in their current issue, reviews the Daysailer and has a list of manufacturers, year of build and numbers. It is identical to the chart posted on this site, under technical information hull number index. It also is identical to the chart I publish in my book... Understanding Maintaining and Repairing your Daysailer II.

As for how I think a manufacturer numbers their hulls, I have a theory... (I'm only speculating here)... Let us say company x, in this case Oday manufactures two types of boats a Oday DS I and an Oday 20. On day one it builds two DS I's lets say and numbers them 1 and 2. On the next day it builds 2 Oday 20's and numbers them 3 and 4. On the next day they built another DS I and the sail number is ... 5 ! Under this speculative theory there is no DS I with a sail number 3 or 4. I have actually heard mention of such a numbering system, but cannot find the reference now, so can only identify this theory as speculative.

Remember also that hull numbering did not become a requirement until November 1972, although Oday seems to have numbered each hull.

Dating...

Postby KaiB » Fri Jul 28, 2006 9:11 am

Ahh, the plot thickens.

This is so very familiar. The art of dating, for instance, Fender Guitars and Amplifiers, follows the same paths.

During the sixties serial numbers were sequential - except when they weren't. Model numbers were assigned - except when they weren't - or until older model (tube charts) were used up. I have, for instance, a 1969 amp with a 1967 "export" tube chart, and components (dated by stamp code) ranging from 1967 thru 1969.

I thus believe that (from the late fifties thru say, '72) O'Day may have run sequential HULL numbers (except when they didn't) and that class (or SAIL) numbers were assigned as sails came from the stockpile - which was not sequential - except when it was.

As Gary mentioned, toss all of this into the rather "loose" State registration processes from the sixties and it could get interesting.

Hmmm...

Hi Kevin,
I dont have any answers, I have the same question. I just purchased a DS1 with a very close class/sail number of 3455 and a hull number of 18825. I'm trying to find out how old my DS1 is too. Please copy me if you get any more info.

Thanks

Hi,

I'm new to the forum but I've been reading it for months. I put together a little (tentative) hull and class number chart with details gathered mostly from this forum. I'll try to post a thumb here. If you can't read it well, try a copy/paste into Word or a photo editor, then either stretch or zoom.
