Proper Centerboard function for 1966 Daysailer

My centerboard has been riding up on its own under speed. I hoisted the boat and cleaned out weeds in and around the centerboard slot. Could this have been the cause of the "self-rising" centerboard? Is it possible that the seaweed, etc. could have been preventing the board from locking into position?

Also, I'm finding that it is difficult to find the right position for the centerboard pass-thru locking pin to catch or meet any resistance. To be honest, I'm not clear whether the pin is supposed to hold the board down when deployed or hold it up when retracted.

I apologize for being such a novice. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I believe most of your problems can be solved by replacing the centerboard gasket and tightning the plate that holds the handle in place.
The pin for the center board should only be used to lock the board up when launching. You should support the center board from underneth when in transport.
When you take the handle assembly apart you will understand how it all works.

I. too had the same problem. I did all the other guys shared to do, but I found that the square hole the handle set in in the center board was not so square.
I sanded down the rudder, fabricated a new plate fron fairly thick aluminium with a tight fitting hole. I then screwed that plate to the old plate after sanding. Then I expoxied the entire cb (it had some craks from time) making sure to tripple glass the new plate to fit the orininal thickness of the board.
Then reassembled the cb, inserted the handle after making a new gasket from think rubber bought at Orchard Supply. Tightened it all down. Now it works great.
But hopefully just tightening the three screw will work for you.
