Just Purchased 71' DS1 and some questions.

Postby MarcCram » Tue Apr 03, 2007 11:21 am

Hi all,
My wife and I just purchased our first boat, a 71' DS1. It is desperately in need of TLC.

I am not new to sailing, even though this boat is eight years older then myself. :-) My parents owned a Hunter 25' in the 70's, I was first on it at 2 months, then a new 81' Newport 28, and finally a 79' Morgan 38(2) in 1988. All three kept in the Northern Chesapeake until 2001 when the Morgan was moved to the western side of Narragansett Bay. This made it hard for me to be on the water. I've sailed locally (in South Jersey) on Designer Choice's (as a kid) and J-24's. So I'm looking forward to teaching my wife the fine art of sailing, and to have FUN!

Pictures of the boat cleanup/restoration can be found here http://www.marccram.com/daysailer/

There is no mast jack as found on the older boats (I believe this is correct) since the title says its a 1971. If joining a fleet how would a sail number be assigned?

The title says this is hull number 1071. But I know that everyone else's HIN#'s are five digits. I cannot find the plate on the forward bulkhead, it was there I can see the different color in the gelcoat. Is there any other way of confirming the hull number. If the title is correct does anyone have a picture of what it should look like so I might be able to recreate it?

I have a set of sails, the main still has the o'day tag on it but the sail has no numbers on it. The jib was from Seidelmann Sails in Moorestown, NJ. The sail bag has "Day Sailer 2902" on it as well as "Seidelmann Sails, Moorestown, NJ" I found a small tag that had "1968 DS" dated 6/25/94 in the bag too. How do I go about finding the "correct" if it isn't correct sail number for this boat?

Finally, (sorry for the long post) the wood work needs to be replaced. I removed it all during the first cleaning and noticed that some parts of each side trim (that mounts to the gunwales), were missing where it meets the stern piece and overlaps onto the deck. Does anyone have measurements of these pieces? I saw the floorboard write up and they look EXCELLENT, since this boat came without floorboards.

Thanks and can't wait to join a fleet after she's seaworthy!
Cheers!
Marc

Marc

Congrats.

I also recently purchased a DSI that needs lots of TLC. (check out my personal gallery). My wood is also a bit broken but it looks to be in better shape than yours.

I would be happy to make you some templates if you would like. My rear wood strip is intact and should be easy to outline. The the top of the sides are a bit broken but you can run the same height all the way back. The very back of mine where it overlaps the stern is broken, so I am planning on extending the wood back a few inches and create a gentle curve to the deck. I can see from the discoloration in the gel coat where it should end.

Maybe others whose wood is in better shape can chime in. Let me know of any other problems you are having and I may have already encountered them. There is a lot of help in this forum so dive in.

BTW my DSI is sail #2383, hull #13742. Luckily I still have the number plate and it only needs to be re-attached. The previous owner’s paper work (who was the second owner) indicated that he purchased it from the original owner in '73. From comparisons to other DSI's on this web I am estimating that my DSI is around '66-'68.

New DS I

Postby gary l. britton » Wed Apr 04, 2007 9:41 pm

Marc:

I have a 1966, DS I, #3235. Looking at your photos, yours looks like the spittin' image of mine, except the color scheme is reversed. Mine is white/light blue. It appears that yours has the same type of mast step as mine also, and no mast jack. The mast just slips over the step.

Looks like a lot of clean up is needed and a few new/used bits of hardware and you'll be fixed up. Good luck and have fun!!!!!

Take care and fair winds. Hope this helps a little.

Hi all,

We just acquired what we think is a 1970 17' DSI in need of some work, but in good restorable shape. We are trying to assess exactly what we have (or will need) in the way of rigging, sails, mast and boom. Not sure anything that came with the boat is quite right. What is the proper height of the mast (we ended up with two masts) and boom. What size are the sails? We are missing a jib, but we appear to have the mainsail. Any info greatly appreciated.

PS

I meant to add that as far as we can see on the plate we have:

hull #6555
class #1001

Hello,
I'm not the sail(class)# or hull# expert but with that sail number you might have an earlier boat (early to mid 60's).

Check out the rigging guide at: http://forum.daysailer.org/tech_rigguide.php
And North Sails One Design Site at http://www.onedesign.com/class/daysailer/daysailer.html the other link is http://www.onedesign.com/class/daysaile ... uning.html

If you can take pictures of the boat, posting images is very easy info is here: http://forum.daysailer.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1162

There are quite a few of us who have a lot of images posted in the user galleries, they may help in your quest to get her on the water.

MarcCram -- Thanks for the very useful links. I also looked at your pictures and our boat looks just like yours -- exact same color scheme. We are not that thrilled with what is now a very washed-out pale blue color even though it is the original color. We are hoping it buffs to a deeper blue. We are such neophytes that our first thought was to paint it green, which our son wanted, but our neighbor set us straight. He sailed an O'Day daysailer as a youngster. He was adamant that we not paint over the original color, plus it is a bad idea to paint the gel unless absolutely necessary, he said. I'll get my son to post pictures of work in progress. Does your mast go through the cuddy to the hull or does it attach at the top of the cuddy cabin? Thanks again.

I have a one piece hull stepped mast, and at this time I'm fine with keeping it that way (I'm 28). But there maybe a time where this mast may come under the saw and split into two.

As for painting, since you have seen my pictures, you know that just removing oxidation isn't an option. I really wish it was that simple! So I will be giving her the sprayed System 3 treatment this fall.

Good luck, and keep us posted!

I bet your boat is older than '71. Probably more like a '62-'63.
The sail number should be 1001 - that's your class number. The hull number is a serial number made by O'Day in the days before the Coast Guard required HIN numbers on boats. When that happened a lot of boats were classified as 1970 year models..

I hope you'll join the class association - we need more members!

Congrats on your boat!
