Sailing the DS1

I finally got the boat in the water for the first time this morning. This is my 5th sailboat and I must say it's already a favorite after one sail.

I've had smaller and larger but this boat just seems to really handle great. There's a real smoothnest about the way the boat moves and handles. Can't wait to get out again!

Do others feel the same about these boats?

I have owned a cutter rigged MacGregor Venture Newport (23ft) and a Luger 30 sloop before purchasing the DS1. Loved them all, but for ease of setup and shear sailing fun factor, the DS is by far my favorite of the 3.

It is fun to sail and very responsive to input adjustments like tiller and sail trim. It is stable most of the time but a bit scary at times in moderate puffs as she tends to heel up quickly so you need to be at the ready.

I do miss the ability to stay on board overnight but the DS compensates by offering the ability to sail into the shallows and go ashore. At the end of the day it only takes a few minutes to get her back on the trailer and ready to tow. So in a summary, the DS offers a lot fun and sailing ability in a small easily managed package. The daysailer does sail very well. Probably because unlike some other small sailboats built with other things in mind (like accomodations) the Daysailer was designed first for sailing. It has a narrow entry for windward work but flattens out to a wide stern so that she planes easily once the wind comes up. Uffa Fox was a well known designer and his talent is apparent here, the boat has a neutral helm and glides along effortlessly. Like you I have also owned many boats but the DS does give me the most pleasure for the least effort.
