New guy saying hi

Postby MadMorgan » Sun Jun 01, 2008 8:42 pm

Well, I finally decided to pull my old '71 DSII out of retirement and teach my 10yr old son how to sail. Just happened across this site.
What a wealth of information there is here!
Good thing too, since my sister was borrowing it when she lived on Sanibel Island the past few years. Needs all kinds of work now, lol. My poor CB and rudder :(

So, I'm sure I'll have a few questions along the way :D

Sure does bring back fond memories though. My first sailboat was a little sunflower when I was 9. I had a bicycle trailer for it, and used to pull it the 2 blocks to the lake every day during the summers.
I lived aboard family sailboats several summers as a teenager and always considered myself a sailor.
Alas, I did go big Sea Ray for a time, but I could just never bring myself to sell the DSII, althought letting my sis borrow it for the past 10 years almost counts, hehe.
She finally moved to St Augustine and bought a 36' Pearson and I ended back up with it a couple of years ago where it's rather just sat.
Today my wife says she's putting it up on freecycle and giving it away  , so I had to get extremely busy and start the restoration if I wanted to keep the old Omega. Pressure washing is now done, and I'll dump it off the trailer next weekend and see about fixing up that CB cable.

Ahh, here I go being long winded again. Sorry.
Glad to have found the site.

Welcome Mike. Glad you found us and that you are going to ship shape your DS. Just one question. Does your sisters 36' Pearson have a beat up keel and rudder or did she get that out of her system on your old DS ?

heh, don't think she's wrecked the thing yet.

So, on another note, I went and checked my hull number.
it's XDYD 7074 05 74
I'm thinking all these years I've owned a 1974 DSII?
Thought even the title said '71 but I haven't seen it for a while.

I'll be sailing my DS2 on sanibel next year.
We bought a house there and will be there in about a year.
I was going to leave the DS at our summer lake house but decided it would get more use on the island.
If your in that area, maybe we can all sail.

I'm in the Orlando area, but that's one of my favorite places to overnight to. Sanibel / Captiva. Back when I used to take the DS out, I'd throw some camping gear in the cuddy, and take my gf on an overnight exploration of some of the small uninhabited islands that dot the whole area.
That's been 20+ years ago now, but those handful of trips are still vivid in my mind. Especially how shallow it got in some areas on the east side of the island, lol!

By all means, let me know when you get down here. I'm almost always up for a trip to that area. I may forego that camping experience at this point in my life, however

How did you like the Ft. Myers area? I've been eyeing it for a little while now. Seems like it would knock the socks off of old Albany, NY weather-wise!

Good sailing there?
