New DS1 Owner

When I saw the movie a while ago I cracked up. It's like when you get a new car and all of a sudden you notice all the same models on the road.

The jib is rigged in the opening shot, the line runs from the jib to the bullseye, through the coaming and to the cam cleat on the CB trunk. It's much clearer in the movie. They did shoot some actual sailing on the water, and others are studio green screen shots. Somebody in continuity messed up!

Here's another shot showing a couple more boats that look like DS's, but it's a bit hard to tell the insignias. It looks like they are DS's but they've rigged them with different sails. The dude with the slick captain's hat calls the DS a "Spatterbox". And he says it's got too much weatherhelm. Funny.

I found an old thread in History that had a list of members and the type, year, and number of their boats. It'd be interesting to revivie that list, and try to figure out defining characterisitics of the various years to aid in placing unknown boats.

If you mean this thread then the owner keeps the list up-to-data in the first post, but that list does not contain the year. You can find the year in the individual posts. Many people have not contributed to the effort, perhaps because they are unsure of boat # or year.

There was one thread where someone had mentiond the desire to capture photographs that show key modifications. Perhaps enough people are interested, covering enough building years, to make such a list (with and without links to photos).

The one on the right is clearly a DS, but the one in the center is not. The hull is too low in front, the bow is not nearly vertical and the cuddy ends before the mast. These features would fit a Rhodes 19, but the logo would not be the same.

Typical mismatch between a script (based on a novel, presumably) and the particular boat that they could actually wrangle (product placement?).

Only had mine out once so far, so can't comment on the weatherhelm, but I have been trying to think of a good name, and Spatterbox is kind of catchy. Means absolutely nothing, and yet everything you want it to at the same time.

I do promise to take copius pictures of the before and afters once I can't bear to have her in the water any longer and start the rebuild over the winter. Sad to say, I'm half (maybe a quarter) hoping for a bad ski season this year so I can spend more time on sprucing up 1114 (No, I didn't really say that, SnowGods. Really).

(I'm not a postwhore or anything, but I do notice that this is the first thread in DS1 Only to go to 3 pages. I have to say, I like it. Lets get some activity up in here- common interests, similar equipment, it's time to share some stories.)

I think the boat second from the right in the picture may be an O'Day Osprey. Similar to the DS, but about a foot shorter. The Osprey's cuddy cabin is shorter and stops behind the mast.

I believe you're right about the Ospray (Looks like it's spelled with an "a" instead of the bird name with an "e")

The Bangor Punta website is an odd duck. It's the source of the pic I posted earlier, too. Assuming it's accurate, pretty good source of archival material for dating boats.

Yes - an odd site and an even odder concept for a company. They seem to own the rights to a lot of companies that have gone out of business. They don't really do anything for O'Day. Quite odd.

Bangot Punta actually went out of business in 1984. Apparently, someone set the site up as an archival thing. Maybe a B-School class project or something.

What to Piper Aircraft, O'Day Sailboats, and Smith and Wesson have in common? THey were all owned by the same company.

I recognized the pic that you posted earlier. I wondered why that site never came up for me before. That's why I love the internet.

Similar story: My grandfather was a naval architect. A few years ago I was searching for something related to my work, and a result came up with his name. I found a publisher who has archived all kinds of boat designs from all sorts of sources, including 19 of my grandfathers. They produce beautiful design folios including blueprints, notes, sketches, etc., and I ordered a copy of each of his. Very cool.
