Mid boom sheeting

Postby rnlivingston » Wed Jul 20, 2011 8:22 am

Hi Dave

On the Mariner I used a Harken Little Fiddle Block with becket. On the boom is a Harken Little Fiddle Block that came with the boat and was originally mounted on the base. I don't think harken still makes either. I found mine on EBay.

I purchased the Daysailer last fall and it came with the setup you see in the picture. I only added the hiking straps. I'm not sure why the jib track was mounted sloping down, but everything seems to work well for me. As far as the fairleads are concerned, they seem to keep the jib sheets in line with the cam cleats.
I just installed a line console under the center of the cuddy with four cam cleats to replace the four jam cleats mounted on the front edge of the cuddy. Easier for my crew to identify lines plus the cams work better than jams.

As I get through this first season, I'm sure I will be making more changes.

mid boom sheeting

On the Mariner I used a Harken Little Fiddle block with hexaratchet and becket I found on ebay. The other Harken Little Fiddle block came with the boat. Not sure if they are available any more.

I purchased the Daysailer last fall and it came with everyting you see in the picture except the hiking straps which I added this year. I'm not sure why the jib tracks slope down, but it seems to work. The fairleads help keep the jib sheets in line with the cam cleats. The Harken Hexaratchet you see mounted on the centerboard trunk with a pad eye (I mistakenly said it was mounted with a block hanger) isn't used with the ratchet on. One hexaratchet is enough for hand holding the main in heavy air.
Not pictured is a line control panel with 4 cam cleats mounted under the center of the cuddy opening I just added. It replaced the jam cleats mounted on the front of the cuddy opening. Hold the lines better and easier for the crew to use.

swivel cleat install, centerboard trunk aft

Postby newfaner » Fri Jul 29, 2011 4:06 pm

Thanks, KC and Roger. I went with a Harken 205 swivel cam cleat w/uprelease, a 57mm standing fiddle with becket and ratchet on the cleat (HAR2674), and a 40mm fiddle on the boom (HAR2655). A very helpful Rod at Mauri Pro Sailing set me up. I'll have a 4:1 ratio, as I understand it, and I'll be using NE Ropes bzzz line of 8mm. My plan w/a machinist friend is to not test the small rectangular flat section aft on the centerboard trunk as a screwing surface (can't tell what's been mounted there before and it's a little small) but rather create a U-shaped aluminum piece (or 3 alum pieces) that mounts to it and gives me a new, large enough platform to attach to. Am I at any risk here of drilling where I shouldn't if I attach on either side of the top of the trunk, using either screws or through bolts? What's beneath all that fiberglass?!

It sounds like you have a good set up now. I think 4:1 is about right for mid-boom. 3:1 might be a little faster for racing but it's not as comfortable. I did the U-shaped, actually 3 pieces of ipe wood, platform for my swivel base instead of using the original anchors. I used 3 number 10 screws into the fiberglass on each side, without penetrating all the way through. I'm on the 2nd season and no sign of any problems. It is still plenty solid. I think you will be fine. I did make mine a very tight fit so that the only stress on the screws is in sheer.

My centerboard does have the heavy cap. If your centerboard trunk does not have the cap you might want to epoxy on a little something on each side.

K.C. do have photo of your main sheet block set-up with the bail attached to the centerboard trunk? I just recently had to re-work mine and am considering a different approach. I like your idea of the bail screwed into the sides of the trunk.
Thanks,

Jim, sorry I just looked through my photos and no cigar. I had one that just about showed it. Unfortunately, my boat is a couple of hundred miles away at the moment. I will be up visiting it next week. I will try to remember to take photos. However, I will not have Internet until I return the following week.
