Replacement mast

Postby TomL » Tue Aug 02, 2011 8:38 pm

Is there a source for a replacement mast other than new? I have located a DSII in fairly good shape except the mast is a total loss  . Looks like new ones with rigging cost about $1000.00.

This boat is close to free but the mast is really bad and so are the sails. That starts adding up to a reasonable used boat just for those components.

Thanks for your help

Did that first thing and may have positive result. Replacemant mast may be available out of Texas. Trying to find out about what the shipping cost will be from San Antonio to Cincinnati.

Thanks again

My experience is that shipping costs of a used mast can be so high that it's not worth it...of course I'm in SC and the used mast I found was in NY.

If you can pick up the used mast yourself it may be the way to go. That way you'll get extra mast hardware in case you need it now or for future repairs.

I ended up buying a new mast from Dwyer Mast (http://www.dwyermast.com/) instead of new. I lined up the new mast alongside the old one and transferred the location of the old hardware fittings to the new mast, drilled holes and pop riveted the hardware onto the new mast.

Buy a riveter at Lowes / Home Depot and your good to go.

Dwyer also has hardware items (new mast step...etc) you might need and the pop rivets. Buy the stainless steel rivets, not the aluminum ones at Lowes...stainless steel is much stronger.

shpping cost

If you don't mind my asking what was the shipping cost for your new mast. It's not heavy just oversized.

The used mast I am looking at is in San Antonio, Texas, we are in Northern Kentucky near Cincinnati. You may be right the shipping cost may be prohibitive but it seems it would be about the same for used as it is for new.

I just drove to Savannah, GA and back from central Texas for a tabernacle type mast for a Rhodes 19 rather than pay shipping costs. I made a little vacation of it as well. I made mast supports to put on the front and back of my Jeep Commander. I also put on a center support and a tail light on the rear end of the mast. Worked very well, but I did get a lot of strange looks from other vehicles. Gas milage coming back didn't seem to be affected. This mast was 25.5 feet long to the hinge base.

I can tell you this: In Silicon Valley, on seeing your Jeep equipped like that, even the most aggressive drivers would stay the heck out of your way. :)

The red thing on the front is a flag. I wanted something noticable on the front when parked. The flag would stay up against the mast while driving and was never a distraction for me. The blue box on the back is a brake light. The mast was high enough to keep most vehicles from hitting it, although I had a few small cars at intersections get up under it in the rear of the Jeep. As a note, I didn't impale anyone or anything along the way.

Total freight was $147, including a bunch of hardware I ordered along with the mast.

I saved around $40 by shipping to a commercial address...it's still my house but I run my own business from home.

The quotes I got for shipping the used mast ranged from $400 to $600. Also there were some issues:
-the used mast needed to be "crated" or "packed" before shipping. Maybe the seller would be willing to do it...the shipping companies will do it for a fee.

-the used mast was not close to the big city where the freight companies are. The seller would need to bring the mast to the freight company.

Better to drive yourself if you are set on a used mast.
