Hiking Strap

I would like to know how to install, and where to buy a hiking strap. I read the different ways suggested on this web site "reefing main, removing boomvang,etc."to avoid a knockdown, thanks for those ideas. But what about installing a hiking strap? any feed back would be appreciated.

I Went to an outdoor shop adpurchased some 2 inlch webbing and sp]nap cips clips. Went to a leather shop an had them sew the clips into loops at the end of each of the four webbing strips. I through bolted eyestraps about threeinches above the sole at the ttransom and at the cuddy buldhead below the cuddy door. These have worked fine for five years now. Make the straps shorter rather than longer. You can always add some line at the ends to make adjustments.

Dean, I installed hiking straps on my DS1 also, and will never be without them in higher winds again. I did the same thing as Dennis, but tied off the fore end to the base of my mast support with rope tied through en eyelet pressed into the strap. Before all that, I purchased some foam pool "noodles" 6 feet long (really cheap) and pushed the strap through each one. It is very comfortable when you are barefooted. I also cut down my wooden coamings. Best thing I could have done. Very comfortable with just about 1/4" remaining above deck.

I would be interested in seeing some examples of hiking straps. If anyone has or would be willing to take a couple pictures, it would be helpful. I'm interested both in location and how they are attached.

Oops, just noticed this is on the DSII section. Oh well. hope it helps give some ideas anyway.


I just took some pics of Lollipop's straps, I will post them in my Personal gallery on this site. I am in the process of updating my original rigging guide, and that is where I will put each new and more detailed description of each of the systems on Lollipop.
I Have used straps that run from mast step to transom and have refined them to what you will see in the photos. First I wanted to have skipper and crew to have individual straps so that when one took their feet out, the other would not get extra slack. I also used the rudder gudgeon hardware to mount the transom fastening point. This way you are not "trusting" the possibly dry rotted wood in the transom.
