Day Sailer ID help

Postby drewschaub » Sat Sep 24, 2016 9:12 pm

Attached a few pictures of a boat that I recently bought. The paperwork says that it is a 1960 O'Day Day Sailer, but the pictures and descriptions of I/II's that I have seen don't match what I have exactly. Any help would be appreciated. Let me know if any additional pictures would help.

The HIN is a hull identification number issued by the state of Rhode Island - presumably to a boat that did not have an manufacturers plate or HIN. If RI registered that boat with a state issued HIN, but then listed a manufacturer, that name would most likely be based on whatever the then owner declared. Not the first boat with demonstrably mistaken entries in state papers.

The 'date' is 04/60, which matches the idea of it being (presumed) to be a 1960 boat when that number was assigned. But it does not look like a DS1 from that year.

I'm thinking that it might be some other sailboat model entirely, perhaps a DS clone. The scalloped cuddy opening and the intricate support beams under the deck are something I do not recall ever having seen on a DS.

Pictures showing the transom (both inside and out), bow and or side view might help.

Since there is no lever for the centerboard, it would make me think it is not a DS I, definitely not a DS II or III. I think Greenlake might be correct in that it is a Day Sailer clone. Apparently O'Day had several legal dealings with manufacturers making clones of the DS I. Pictures of the exterior would help.

Thanks to you both for the reply. Here are a few more pics that I had available. I'll post a few more when I can get them.

Looks like an ANNAPOLIS DISCOVERER 18 to me.
O'DAY did have a legal fight with Sailstar over their 17' EXPLORER model, which admittedly does look very close to a DS I, however, that boat was slightly longer and quite different, although to really see that you need to see the 2 boats side by side. I think somewhere on the Day Sailer Association forums I have posted pictures of a DS I sitting next to a Sailstar Explorer.
My first thought was that this boat might be a Sailstar, but the cuddy is different, more rounded than an Explorer.

Pretty confident this is a Discoverer 18.

That looks very similar to mine. i got hull 276, if the boat works out, I may consider a set of actual daysailer sails for it.

The boat pictured is NOT a DAY SAILER, this is am ANNAPOLIS DISCOVERER 18, later made by American Fiberglass. I see that a set of Day Sailer sails would be smaller than the original sails for the Discoverer 18, which has 20 square feet more sail than the Day Sailer.

Should be possible to find a sailmaker to run a set of sails that fit a DISCOVERER 18, but not being a mass-market item, that may cost a bit.

my hull 276 is an Annapolis discoverer. I haven't sailed it yet. Does anyone have any comments on their performance and sailing characteristics or potential issues?

I think you are unlikely to get very detailed suggestions related to features specific to the DISCOVERER. The sailing characteristics and basic design issues are similar, so you might benefit from reading deeply in the archived discussions.
