securing mast foot

new owner learning the boat.
Here's a photo of the mast foot and the receiver in the hull.
I don't have any other parts for this and I am wondering how the mast foot connects to the hull.

Sound a bout right. There should be something that restricts the fore-aft movement of the mast foot, that is, assigns it a definite position. That position defines the desired mast rake. There's no need to make a "connection" as the tension in the rigging will not let the mast "jump" out.

the metal channel has holes along its length. So maybe just two pins are needed to restrict any forward or back movement of the mast step?

I think that is how it's done. (Mine is a bit different but I've sailed on boats that have this setup).

Airgroup - my SLI mast foot looks similar and I have two "pins" going through the track holes that line up front and back of the mast foot and they hold the mast from moving aft or forward.

There are some pictures here in this thread, one pin is a cotter pin the other a SS bolt with a nut. viewtopic.php?f=12&t=6033

The thread is mostly about me trying to figure out the tabernacle set up on my boat but should help you.
