Main halyard pulleys at top of mast worn out. New Member

I just bought a Day Sailor I and have been working on making its seaworthy. I took it out for the first time today and while I was able to sail, I had trouble with the main halyard. The halyard came off the pulleys at the top of the mast and I never did get the sail totally up (about 8 inches from top). After getting the mast down I could see that not only that the pulleys didn't turn well, but also the plastic wheels were chipped so the cable would slip down to the side of the pulley and jam. It looks riveted on (see picture). Anyone have an idea of the best way to replace that pulley with something available today and more robust?

Drill out the rivet, replace by a stainless steel clevis pin of same diameter. Source of replacement sheaves: as Tom wrote. (And no, there never, ever are any "pulleys" on board ).

Thanks for the information! I was able to solve the problem (I hope) more easily by replacing the halyard (which had a section of wire) with 3/8" line which doesn't slip down between the sheave and it's housing. Even though I never did get the sheaves turning freely, the line slides easily over the plastic. Thanks for the responses, I am sure I will need that link soon!

Glad you had a workaround. 3/8" is rather hefty for a halyard, though.

I'm using 3/16" for a halyard (Amsteel to be precise) and am glad not to have the weight/bulk going up the main.

I did replace my sheaves once one of the edges had chipped as in your picture. That plastic will just slowly corrode and get more brittle over time.

I was told by a rigger anytime you replace a halyard from cable to a line halyard (rope ) you should replace the sheeves due to the cable makes chips in the sheeves and will cause the halyard to wear. I replaced both halyards with 1/4 sta-set and sheeves from D&R Marine. John
