Rudder sank - need replacement - any suggestions?

Postby gosailing » Mon Jul 30, 2007 9:33 pm

Turtled my DS1 today - after righting no more rudder - not good. Found a website Idasailor thet sells an upgraded tiller/rudder assembly for $379.

Does anybody have any suggestions where I might find a new/used rudder for less.

Thanks,

Les

Is this a legal rudder?

This rudder doesn't appear to be class legal. Can Bob confirm or deny this?
Section 6.4 in the bylaws outlines general rudder shape/dimensions.

Of course all this doesn't matter if you don't compete!

You can easily build one. I did and it cost about $60. It is lighter and stronger than the original, and has the proper foil shape. I got the profile from the Measurements menu and the expertise from some old posts in this column for DS1s.

Thanks Crawford, I will look back through previous postings and see what I can find.

The rudder from Idasailor is not class legal. Best options are D and R marine or Cape Cod Shipbuilding.
