She sails again

After ten years of neglect, and some restoration work, hull #3395 was on the wataer for the first time in years. She is now named the Truelove.

A friend and I were out Sunday. Coincidently another scow sailor went into the water and had to be rescued. The local news picked up the story and captured me sailing by in the Truelove.

I was impressed to see your daysailor in the background of the video. I'll bet the water in your lakes are still pretty cold. The question I would like to ask is do you wear some sort of wet or dry suit when sailing in addition to the PFD when the water temperatures are cold? If so, what would be the proper thickness of the wetsuit? Would a dry suit be just as good? The reason I ask is I would like to try and lengthen my sailing season here in central Oklahoma, but a little timid about cold water temperatures. We get a lot of fine days during the late fall to early spring, but water temperature is the main concern.

Glad you were able to get the boat out. So far I have had about 6 sails so far this spring. Have had a couple of nice days on the weekends which is a change. You know how it goes, the best sailing days are during the week, or at least it seems that way.

I definitely wear a drysuit when I sail in the early spring/late fall. Mine is a 5mm by Neil Pryde. There are many choices though, others by Bare, Oneil; just check some distributors like Layline. A wetsuit might be ok once the air temps start climbing and the water is in the mid 50's. It's just how comfortable you want to be. A drysuit will do just that, keep you dry, and when the air temp is in the low 50's the last thing you want to be is wet. On a sunny day you can get away with less.

No wetsuit, although I see the sailboarders wearing them. It was about 50 degrees that morning, and the water temp was about 45-50. As a general rule I always wear my inflatable pfd, unless the winds are quite light. I find the inflatables wo be much more comfortable. Tha tmorning I had on a conventional pfd becuase I did need the extra insulation.
