1986 DS I Precision – Drain Plugs

Postby stevefromga » Thu Jun 05, 2008 9:34 pm

I have a “new” 1986 DS I Precision that needs 2 drain plugs. I guess that I could go to Wal-Mart and buy those rubber stoppers used in bass boats, but I was hoping to just get a replacement for the 2 drain plug assemblies.

Based on my research, I think that I need what is called a white bayonet drain plug. Here is one at layline, (http://www.layline.com/product/10850/783) . I assume that my originals did not have the “keeper”, or they'd still be there. These things are $8/each! I was going to buy a spare set – but now I'm not so sure. What do you think about the Laser® Drain Plugs found here (http://www.coliesail.com/laser/lsrhdw.html)? It was built by Precision. So perhaps these would work (2 for $8 ). Any advice? I need to buy the right product -- so anyone with this model, please provide some guidance – I can not sail until I get these puppies! :D

The laser type plugs are as good as the white ones. Just make sure they are the proper size for the holes, the newer laser ones are a bit larger than the older ones. You can always enlarge the holes tho.

On the other hand I prefer the Bayonet type, cuz sand and debris does not foul them like the threaded ones.

The price you mentioned seems high. APS, Anapolis Preformance Sailing has some at about $4. Also try Layline, or Defender Marine Outfitter. All three are good to deal with. Should be able to fine them with Google.

If you promise not to capsize, you can temporarly use duct tape to seal the holes.

Happy sailing and enjoy your 'NEW' DS.
