Lake Powell & new Boat

Postby fishear » Sat Jun 07, 2008 9:18 pm

I'm buying a Ds2 tomorrow..Haven't been in one since I sold mine 20 years ago.

Just came back from Lake Powell in Utah where my son is a Ranger..While visiting he remarked he'd love to have a little sailboat like I had when he was a kid.

Came home to Santa Fe and sure enough there was one in the newspaper.[I'm in the middle of the desert]..a '78 with Ob & trailer for $2000...So I'm buying it for him...My question; anyone have experience sailing on Lake Powell?? and What should I look[out] for in the boat??.....Thanks

Lake Powell

Postby SaltLakeSailer » Sun Jun 08, 2008 1:33 pm

Hi. The day I purchased our 1967 Daysailer in Page, AZ, we crossed the dam, rigged the boat, and set out for an inaugural sail on very calm water. My experience was that powerboaters on lakes don't know any of the rules and regs. This was reinforced later when power boaters on a local (to SLC) reservoir regularly cut across our path without sufficient clearance. So, be sure to give them plenty of berth. Also, I don't want to denounce all motor boats; I'm sure there are plenty of outstanding operators out there. The popular reservoirs seem to attract the worst of 'em. Seek out unpopular spots for waterskiing, jet skiing, and/or all out power boating. Fishing boats appear to be the friendliest out there; probably because we sailors are moving more their speed. Good luck.

we were at the shore yesterday.
Barnaget bay used to look like NY city instead of cars zooming every which way it was power boats.
yesterday a beautiful day on the water , there were hardly any power boats out.
Today I noticed the same thing again. More sailboats and only a handful of power boats.
I think the gas prices are hurting the power boaters.

For one day for my speedboat now costs me $50.00 , I hate to see what the guys with the two 1000 hp engines will be paying for a day.
So maybe it won't be so bad for you on the lake.
