Standing Rigging: DSI -vs- DSII

Postby hriehl1 » Fri Jun 27, 2008 9:41 am

I've had a 1983 DSII whose standing rigging I recently replaced with a purchase from D&R Marine.

Now I've bought a 1968 (black-hull "Commemerative Edition") DSI. It has two sets of side stays, one from mast-to-mast thru a small pair of upper spreaders and another pair from mast to desk. That pair's spreaders are way lower on the mast than on my DSII.

I don't have both boats in the same place... does anyone know if this DSI's mast-to-deck side stays and its fore stay are the same length as on my 1983 DSII? If so, I'd like to swap them to get the newer stays onto the DSI (which is the one I intend to keep).

Thanks

From what I've read a lot of people remove the upper stays (mast - mast) although I've left mine on for the time being at least.

I don't know if the side stays and forestay are interchangable from the DS1 to DS2 but if yours is anything like mine there are no turnbuckes on the stays and the only adjustment is through the mast jack. So you may not be able to put them on the DS2. Another improvement most people make but since my stays are said to be new, and look it I'll leave them for now.

P.S. Sounds like a nice find.

I can't help you with your shroud length question but you've aroused my curiosity. I have a Commemorative Edition also and its standing rigging isn't like what you describe. Mine has a forestay and a port and starboard shroud with a pair of spreaders.
My boat has a single piece gold anodized tapered Proctor mast. What does yours have?

My mast is not tapered... it seems exactly like that on my DS II. I think it is a basic extruded aluminum gold anodized mast. Both mast and boom have stickers that they come from some rigging company in Connecticutt.
