hull (brass?) strip near centerboard

Postby surfnsail24 » Wed Jul 02, 2008 1:49 am

Can anyone tell me where exactly I could find a replacement piece for the (brass?) hull strip that is on each side of the centerboard. Mine is very corroded .. thought i'd replace it before painting the bottom....

thanks in advance!

replacement piece for hull/centerboard area

Postby surfnsail24 » Wed Jul 02, 2008 10:12 am

thanks roger- but I don't think that was the piece I was looking for. it's about 4 or 5 feet long/maybe an inch or little more wide and screws into the bottom of the hull. In between this piece is where the rubber and the center board protrudes out when sailing with it down. looks like one piece of brass to me not a bunch of little pieces...

It sound like some one might have made a centerboard trunk gasket ( I don't know if that's what it would be called ) if that's what it is it's purpose is to seal off the well that holds the centerboard. The thought behind that is it will decrease the drag created by the opening when the board is in the full down position. That is just a quick quess so I might be completly wrong. If you could snap a picture or two and post them someone might give you a better answer/guess than mine.

it may be a protective strip

It may be a protective strip that a previous owner placed down the middle to protect it from beach abrasion.

I can't help with the original post, but I would like to ask a question about the small brass strips (pictured on the DR Marine page). On my boat, I have those small strips, and behind one of them is a loose piece of somthing that sometimes causes the board to jam. It appears that the little hole in the middle of the brass strip (not the two holes on either end for holding the strip in place) is for some kind of set screw, but in my quick peek under the boat the other day I did not find a a second hole in that moving piece behind the strip capable of receiving a set screw. Any ideas on how this set-up is supposed to work?

I used to have a DSII like that, but I don't recall any set screw. The two plates hold a thick Delrin dowel in an enclosed pocket in the hull. The dowel goes throught the pivot hole in the board. The dowel turns freely in its pocket. It's a very simply arrangement, and it's hard to imagine how that part of the system would stick.

The usual board-binding problem on the DSII is the centerboard uphaul cable. When the board is down, the slack uphaul tends to wedge between the board and the trunk--sometimes so tightly that the boat has to be hauled and the board removed. The fix is to attach a bungee to the uphaul cable where it emerges from the front of the trunk inside the cuddy. Run the bungee to the base of the mast. When the board is lowered, the bungee will stretch enough to let the board down, but will keep enough tension on the cable that it won't droop between the board and the trunk.

Thanks for the info on the bungie and the uphaul.
I have not had that problem yet and now I know to look out for it and how to fix it.
Boy this is a great site!!!!
