boom tent?

OK, I looked in the search and did not find anything about boom tents. I'm hoping this is not a redundant topic. If it is, if someone could point me to where to find info that would be great.

So I need a quick boom tent by the end of the week. The boat is new to me so pardon my rush. I'm hoping to take the boat with me to New Hampshire and leave it for a couple of weeks at a time at our dock, unattended.

Do any of you have thoughts on how to rig up a boom tent. The boat has a topping lift set up. Can I just use that and a small tarp or should I make a crutch for the boom? How are you guys securing the tarp at the edges? Sorry, I have no experience here.

Home Depot sells canvas tarps that have grommets every 3-4 feet. I use mine for a summer boat cover, but I would imagine you can rig it up as a boom tent, using the back cleat and the stay for attachment. The topping lift would be a simple way of holding up the boom as long as it is strong enough.

Ethan, thanks for the Home Depot tarp suggestion. That sounds like it will do the trick for now.

My DS I came with a boom tent (homemade, I think).

With the boom lifted & secured (topping lift or OEM oar/crutch), it simply drapes over the boom to each gunwale. There are a series of grommets along each side, each with a small bungee knotted to the grommet with s-type hooks on the end of the bungee that hook over the rubrail to provide tension on the tent so rain rolls off onto the rail.

It's at the dock now or I'd measure it for you. I'll be on Winnipesaukee this weekend too... black-hull DS1 with no sail number. We'll be on the southern part of the lake, probably somewhere between Wolfeboro and Guilford.

I'll be looking for a black hull DS! I've got the red/orange hull and sail number 7002. I'll be sailing out of Glendale Saturday morning, if the weather's good. I'll most likely be somewhere in the 40 islands or somewhere around Welch to Bear.

Thanks for the added info on the boom tent! I can envision that and I should be able to estimate the size of the the tarp. I don't know why I didn't think about bungees and just hooking them over the rail. That makes it easy.

Some canvas ground tarps are covered with some sort of waxy substance as water repellant. I used one years ago and got a lot of olive drab waxy stuff on the boat. It took a lot of work to clean it off, so be aware of this possibility.

They're attached to tent grommets with bungee.
